Hello, Marja!
By some coincidence, I do not grow the two irises that you mention that are
grown by Arnold Koekkoek, but I do grow the other three. SHENANIGAN
(Keppel, '85) is a BB plicata in a bright - some might even say gaudy -
combination of rich purple markings on a rose pink ground. DOLL (Keppel,
'87) is an IB plicata with a more subdued variation on the same theme -
rosy mauve markings on a coral beige ground. I have found this one to be a
shy bloomer the first year after it is planted, but a bounteous producer of
bloom in the second year, after which it, like most medians, needs to be
divided and replanted. HELLCAT (Aitken, '83) is another IB, this time in
the neglecta pattern (light blue-violet standards and deep blue-violet
falls). Many people consider it to be a scaled-down version of its famous
TB parent, MYSTIQUE, the 1980 American Dykes Medal winner.
SHENANIGAN received the Knowlton Medal, the highest AIS award for BB's, in
1991, while HELLCAT won the Hans and Jacob Sass Medal, the highest AIS
Award for IB's in 1990. Hans and Jacob Sass were brothers who were born in
Alt Duvestedt, Germany, and as boys emigrated to this country with their
parents over 100 years ago. They both became leading hybridizers of bearded
irises during the early decades of the present century and their
achievements are perpetuated at the Sass Memorial Garden near their homes
in Nebraska.
I hope all these iris will grow and bloom well for you in the Rheinland.
