Thanks Jan - sounds like there must be a range of response among
cultivars of each of the small species to rainfall and I bet to high
temperature too. So when I see the range of response in, for instance,
TB descendants from aphylla, that could be due to the mix of heredity
from the TB and aphylla or from variability within aphylla.
I think we may have talked about this once before, but I seem to be slow
in putting it all together. Is there evidence that, for example, the
growth habit of losing leaves in response to heat/drought stress might
be inherited 'straight' from one of the diploid ancestors? Is that a
trait that might be controlled by one set of genes that stay together?
I assume this is a pretty complicated response of the plant and don't
know nothin' about how such things work or are passed along.
