Iris quandry

From: moonsage@direct.ca

I was picking up a rose bush from a neighbor yesterday and she mentioned
that she didn't want the irises that were growing near them either. I
took them of course.

When I got them home and went to divide them up and put them in a bleach
solution, I noticed that there were some unsual holes in the bottom of
most of the rhizomes. Otherwise, the whole plants looked healthy. I'm
just not sure what the cause of these can be.

I'll hold them in the bleach solution in hopes that someone here would
have some ideas. I really don't think they're caused by iris borers
since the rhizomes look nice and plump and healty.
