Sinking Irises

From: David Silverberg <sil1812@molalla.net>

When I was gardening (irising) back in N.J. it was not at all unusual
for my "duck on water" plantings to pull themselves down into the
ground. Since I had a very sandy soil, which drained quickly, I assumed
that the roots were reaching for water and pulling the rhizomes down
below ground level. I came to the conclusion that within a growing
season or two irises will find their proper growing level in any soil
condition.
