The variegated-leaf pallidas have been around for a while and each often
travels under one or another of several aliases. The one with the white
variegation is designated as ARGENTEA in the 1939 AIS Checklist. The one
with the cream/yellow variegation is officially PALLIDA VARIEGATA. "Zebra"
is one of its unofficial synonyms.

Purple-based foliage (pbf) is a characteristic that some TBs have inherited
from the species Iris variegata, which is one of their diploid ancestors
(or perhaps from I. aphylla, too?). The amount of purple pigment varies
from a slight blush to a heavy infusion that carries well upward from the
base of the leaves. TENNESSEE GENTLEMAN is an example of the former and
ELSA SASS of the latter, as I have observed them growing in my garden.
Widely grown cultivars with pbf include CAPRICIOUS, TEMPTING, and PROUD
TRADITION, as well as the Dykes' Medal winners, TITAN'S GLORY and HONKY
TONK BLUES.

Brad Kasperek has combined white leaf variegation with purple based foliage
in his 1995 introduction, ZEBRA BLUSH, to produce a tricolor effect (the
flower on this cultivar is a bicolor with light yellow standards and light
rose falls with lavender beards - quite a combination of color in one
package withal).
