CULT?: Abnormal flowers

From: "Rodney Barton" <rbarton@hsc.unt.edu>

All,

Last spring there were a number of reports on the list of irises blooming with abnormal flowers. I myself had an I. cristata bloom with 5 falls. Speculation was that it was due to the low temperatures. I'm currently reading a book, a review actually, "The Development of Flowers" by Richard Greyson. There is not a single mention of irises. He does site a study of flower development in Cannabis where plants were induced to flower at reduced night temperature (22'C for 8 hr and 10'C for 16 hr for 5 cycles). These plants had significantly more abnormal flowers than those induced at the control temperature (22'C constant). The abnormalities included missing, extra and fused petals. Greyson also sites a couple of other studies where environmental factors were shown to shown to alter flower development. It seems likely that this is what happened with our iris this spring.
