Sorry, Ellen, in Scandinavia we have loong summerdays, ever heard of "Land
of the Midnight Sun"?
The summers are cold enough and short enough but the days are long with many
hours of light which doesn't suit all plants.
Commercial gardeners keep some flowers, for example chrysanthemums, in
greenhouses and give them "short-day treatment" with lamps in order to get
them to grow and bloom properly. So I have heard, anyway.
Perhaps your hybridizing friend could try that technique?
