In a message dated 98-10-20 10:01:45 EDT, you write:

<< All of the above (ex. I. thunbergii) are listed in the index of "A Guide
to
Species Iris" published by the BIS. It would be a very valuable reference
for
you if you are going to spend the time growing them >>

Paul, I would agree with John Jones on this. Any study of the more obscure
Iris species necessarily involves access to current taxonomic information. At
this point the BIS book from Cambridge is the most current and while some of
us have wished aspects of the book were different, there is no question that
it is of considerable value to the serious student.

A few interesting things that can be gleaned about some your irises from a
quick glance at this source are these:

Re: I. sikkimensis: Although Dykes formally described this and grew this for
four years he never got any seeds from it and it has not been collected since.
He considered it a natual hybrid.

Re: I neglecta: At least two things have been so called. The usual meaning is
to refer to a bearded cultivar which is considered a natural hybrid of I.
pallida and I. variegata.

Re: I. humilis: Here again, at least two very different things have been so
called: I. pontica and I. douglasiana.

Older scientific literature is of very great value for many things, but
sorting out the archaic taxonomy can be intricate and challenging. One must
use the recent scientific scholarship to illuminate the older.
