Re: SPEC : Info needed please

Greetings:

I told Paul:
<<Re: I. humilis: Here again, at least two very different things have been
 so called: I. pontica and I. douglasiana.>>

To which Juri replied:
<< Anner, you apparently meant I. pontica and I. flavissima, isn't it?>>

Juri is correct. In the interest of brevity I did not list all the
possibilities.

Let me get the book out again.....okay...here it is...

Looking in the BIS index on p.364 I am first directed to page 13, on which we
find that I humilis is seen as a species of Section Psammiris.

I am also referred to page 59 on which it is remarked that Mathew finds
culture of I. bloudowii easier than that of I. humilis.

On page 60 we find I. humilis Georgi has I. flavissima Pall. listed as a
synonym. I understand this to be the current I. humilis.

On page 147 we see I. humilis Beechey as a synonym of I.douglasiana Herbert.

On page 184 we see I. humilis Bieb. as a synonym of I. pontica Zapalowicz.

And last, but not least, on page 210 we find I. humilis Sieber ex Baker [nom.
in schaed.] as a synonym of I. unguicularis subsp. cretensis (Janka) Davis &
Jury.

So, my point was that depending on when the name appeared in a book or
article, one of several irises could conceivably be the object of the
reference. Since some of the names on Paul's list looked archaic, I thought
this might be relevant.

I hope no one will ask me to explain the ramifications of the more complex
Authority signatures above. I don't understand them all.
