I've always been a believer in leaving the roots, for firmer attachment
to the soil if nothing else.  What I have seen often is that rhizomes
dug and immediately replanted, with roots left on, seem to keep right on
growing, don't need to take time to grow new roots before showing top
growth.  I know that the accepted "truth" is that the old roots die and
new ones form when one transplants a rhizome to a new home, but it
doesn't seem to work that way all the time.  My own experience leads me
to believe that there must be truth in the view that roots can
regenerate when the rhizome is reset.
