Re: CULT: borer - mowing

From: "Kevin or Cheryl Oke" <okephoto@gulfislands.com>

I'm curious about all this talk or iris borer. I wouldn't have
a clue what they looked like so I assume I have never had
one - even after nearly a decade of growing iris and not always
being scrupulous about tidying up the beds (though I usually am).
Is this just not a problem in the northwest? Or have I just been
incredibly fortunate? I have occasionally had a rhizome rot. Is
that a sign?

Incidentally, except for using Trounce to zap - without much success -
dreadful infestations of tent caterpillars and a twice yearly spray of the
same junk on gooseberry bushes (since ripped out in a fury because
they punctured me once too often, and I don't like gooseberries anyway)
because of the horrid sawfly larvae, and dormant oil on the fruit trees
if we get around to it, we never use anything more toxic than Later's
bulb dust on anything - and have been trying to find a way around
that, too. Does anyone know of a bulb dust that doesn't have any
nasty chemicals in it?

From the grey and gloomy but warm and not raining West Coast,
and doing anything to avoid tackling the revision of the [library]
cataloguing manual I'm supposed to be spending this morning on,
Cheryl
