The iris borer has never been reported on the west coast,
particularly in the Pacific Northwest. Our list is made up of
iris lovers from very diverse climates, each with their own
challenges for growing irises.
Your climate is one of the best for growing irises, as evidenced
by the two huge and myriad smaller commercial growers
located in Oregon,California and Washington. Many of the
exotic measures taken by list people are to combat extreme
heat and dryness, long winter freezes without snow cover,
humid and hot summers, poorly drained soil, and pests/disease
endemic to their areas.
It is a always a good idea to be vigilant for problems and to learn
what to do about them. If you are having good results with the
way your iris grow, by all means keep doing it. Introduce culture
changes slowly to determine if they make things better (or worse) or
have no noticeable effect.
