Hi Nancy:
Hmmmmmmm - odd. Usually this happens during the winter and is the result of
freezing and thawing. I can't imagine what is causing this now - but I DO
know that this is not good for irises. For wintertime heaving, we recommend
stepping the iris back into contact with the soil.... and then putting a
brick on top of it to keep it there. Might be too early for the brick where
you like, however, so you might tell your friends to add enough soil to get
their rhizomes in 'full body contact', and it might not be a bad idea to
reset them next year.
