RE: LA: Irises for Houston

From: "William Groth" <groth@rice.edu>

Hello Mark,

I will probably try the Lousiana Irises in one or two beds. They
are a hardy plant and should do well in our climate. I may do one
in a bog type situation because I have two 20 gal fish tanks
(one of which leaks) which I can put some soil into and add water
to create a small water garden/bog situation. Also, I can put
one or two into a raised bed which is mulched so as to retain
adequate moisture. Experimentation for me this year.

The other thing I really want to try is some of the SDB's and MDB's
in pots. That will allow me to be more selective regarding the
make-up of the soil and the amount of water, sun, etc. that they
get.

William Groth,
Welcome to iris-talk. You can grow Irises in Houston, but not the same
kinds as farther north. Try the Louisiana Irises. They are suitable for
the Gulf Coast climates. They do have to be kept moist, so if your soil
does not hold water very well, they would have to be grown in sunken kiddie
pools like I grow them here in the sandy hills in Florida.
