CULT: anybody want to enter the root races?

I am conducting preliminary trials for a new, unsponsored, annual root
race among TBs.  The real races will be next year.

Anyone is elligible to compete, anywhere in the world.  Rules - pot your
irises in the smallest pots they will fit in.  Fertilize & water any way
you want.  Take notes on which are the top 5 cultivars in getting roots
out the bottom of the pot (the first teensy root tip you can see counts)
& post results to the list.  There can be two categories - shaved and
unshaved.  No fair poking roots out the holes in the bottom as you pot -
these have to be NEW roots or root tips.

Mike Sutton was brave enough to send me a few of their seedlings &
intros to torture and our (very small) discussion on-list about rates of
root growth and using that to identify cultivars that need coddling got
me thinking about it more as I watch Mike's plants struggle to adjust to
the shock of what has happened to them.

Results of this year's preliminary root race trials, which included some
plants from Cooley's that arrived about the same time, plus some non-TBs
from Suttons:

First place: one of Mike's seedlings that he says is too ugly to
introduce

Second place: AGATHA CHRISTIE (IB Sutton)

Third place: STRIKE IT RICH (TB Ernst)

Fourth place: tie between MALAYSIA (TB Ernst), STRIKE IT RICH (TB
Ernst), HOOKEM HORNS (TB SA Sutton)

Linda Mann east Tennessee USA - rebloom stalks popping up all over the
place on Harvest of Memories, Perfume Counter & Immortality.  No more
fans big enough to bloom on Northward Ho, whose only fault is the stinky
smell!  Such a pretty flower.  And I just found a seedling from my
(pallida X Mulberry Rose) seedling X Celebration Song.  What a
hybridizing program - one eensie seedling 2 yrs after planting.
