Re: CULT: late planting

Cheryl:  I can't remember from your earlier message where you are located, but I know that if you are zone 4 or northward (and maybe zone 5, too, though I can't say) any iris planted this late have an almost 0% chance of winter survival.  Simply not enough time to grow roots sufficient to keep them in the ground when it freezes, UNLESS maybe the fall continues to hang on and winter doesn't come in earnest for a few more weeks.  I suppose then they might make it, but in any case they would need a good mulch, but an airy one, to keep them from the disaster of the freeze/thaw cycle and from heaving.  If you don't have too many, why not pot them and keep them inside the house under light or in front of windows for the winter.  They might not bloom next year, but at least they'd survive.  If this isn't possible, I wouldn't give a cent for their making it.  On the other hand, if you dig them out and toss them away you know they won't live, so might as well try to help them make it as the best alternative.  Nothing ventured, nothing gained.  It will be a learning experience if nothing else, and you can tell us about it, esp. if you succeed!
