AIS Region 20 (Colorado) is currently funding a research project to test the
effectiveness of alfalfa in growing iris. Dr. David Holm of Colorado State
University is setting up controlled experiments on planting done this
summer. We should see some interesting results within a couple of years.
In the absence of controlled experimentation, it seems to me very difficult
to determine just what factors were responsible for the success or failure of
a crop. If I pour beer in my iris bed and have a good bloom season, in my
igorance I will be inclined to continue the beer treatment indefinitely. I
am reminded of the ceremonies of early agricultural societies who religiously
repeated rituals that had become associated with successful crops or rain.
