Wow - thanks Douglas.  Really appreciate your posting the summary.  I
guess whatever works best as a preservative is doing its job because it
is toxic to whatever wants to 'eat' it.  I guess even naturally
resistant wood like locust, eastern red cedar heartwood, American
chestnut, white oak heartwood contain toxic phenols etc, tho soil
microbes can chew that up eventually.

Then there is plain ol' pine lumber that has to be replaced every few
years as it rots and adds organic matter to the soil.
