Although I don't really understand the US zoning system, I have been told 
that this area is equivalet to US zone 9. Our minimum winter temps are round 
minus 5 deg celcius, we very rarely have any snow fall (once every 5 years, 
or so, and it doesn't settle on the ground) but we get plenty of frosts.
My SDB's grow and flower very well. They like a sunny position, and a cool 
root run, so I use a little mulch, not too close to the rhizomes.
Perhaps you will have more luck with them, once they are established.
