From http://pantone.com

Talking about Pantone color charts which we use in printing.

How often should I replace the Guide?

Solution:
As the PANTONE Color Formula Guide is printed with ink on paper, both of
which are organic materials, the Guide will age. The ink fades and paper
yellows. These changes will be more apparent in the lighter colors. Pantone
advocates replacement of the Guide on an annual basis, from date of first
use.

May be not worthless but how accurate do you want to be? Most charts are
printed on paper and once exposed to light will change, some colors more
than others.
