Thanks, John, for the great photo guide to terminology (actually toe and
wedge, but it sounded like folk dancing....).  So the wedge is bulge on
the rhizome where an increase is obviously forming and toe is the tiny
little increase before it's big enough to make any leaves.  Now that I
see the photos, I certainly recognize them, especially from west coast
rhizomes I've ordered, but for some reason haven't noticed/paid
attention to them on my home-grown rhizomes.  Mainly, I think, because
most increase on rhizomes here (mostly oncers) tends to appear on either
side of the where the bloom stalk appears, at the end of the rhizome.
