van Bourgondien's is not really a "foreign" firm, but is based in New York
State. Like most of the bulb firms that send out color catalogs several
times a year, this outfit is not a grower, but a broker. They buy bulbs
from growers in the Netherlands and elsewhere, package them, and send them
to their customers. In some cases, the growers do the packing in units of
5, 10, 25, or 50 bulbs, and the pictures for the catalogs are supplied by a
central agency (ever notice the identical pictures in catalogs from
different bulb suppliers?).

That said, I have been dealing with this company for the past 10-12 years,
have ordered many bulbs from them (but never plants) and have no reason for
complaint. The bulbs have always been as advertised, true to name and of
good size and condition. Prices are standard in the bulb trade or a bit
lower (for the bargain collections at the back of the catalog).

One caution with ordering plant material other than bulbs from companies
that broker Holland-grown material is that much of the perennial plant
material might not be propagated by division, but by seed. That means that
the varietal names applied are only approximations, and the seedlings you
get may not be the true variety. This probably makes little difference
with species, but it does if you are expecting a particular named cultivar.

The best source for irises is ALWAYS a specialty iris grower.
