Hi Al and All,
I always thought plentiful rain was supposed to increase rebloom, but our
experience the last several years has been the opposite. We have always had
spotty rebloom and then mostly in late fall when they have to be protected
from freezes. However, in 1998 and especially in 1999, which were severe
drought years, we had early and significant quantities of rebloom. Violet
Returns bloomed all summer last year. This year, which had almost too much
rainfall in late spring and early summer, it has not rebloomed at all. Queen
Dorothy, Pink Attraction and Little Showoff which did well last year also
have not rebloomed this year. We had a couple MDBs rebloom in early July.
Then came a big surprise. Our IB introduction LILAC POINT (81) has never
rebloomed in 20 years, but this year sent up a bloom stalk in late August and
another in early September. Nothing else has rebloomed so far. All our
rebloomers are planted at our public display garden (Zone 6) because very few
ever rebloom at home (Zone 5). Oh, I forgot, Siberian CORONATION ANTHEM sent
up one late bloomstalk at home.
