Kitty,
Our club still uses wine bottles and I've been trying to get them to go
to PVC pipe. I made a prototype recently and I used a synthetic cork
intended for a wine bottle. I cut the cork in half, so the plug was
about 1" thick and inserted the uncut end. Before inserting it, I used
clear silicone bathroom caulk and it formed a tight seal. The synthetic
cork last much longer than natural cork and the silicone caulk claims a
20+ year life. I have used the silicone caulk to make patches in a butyl
pond liner and it has held quite well, even through freeze-thaw cycles.
Good luck.

> Our club met today and decided it was time to make new show vases. Our currert vases are PVC pipe that slip
into redwood bases. The bases could be re-used, we just need to
purchase new PVC, cut and make plugs for the
ends. The plugs for the ends are the challenge. A couple of us have
tried to find something at the hardware store,
but still find them leaking. We can put on a PVC cap, but the cap is
larger than the pipe, and doesn't balance well
in the base. Does anyone have ideas on a simple but good method to seal
the end of a PVC pipe (inside) that will be
permanent for upwards to 10 years? If you want to send ideas offline,
please do.
