I mulch my bearded irises with plain ol' dirt in winter
- it seems to help prevent frost heave and rot in early
spring. I take the dirt off the top of the rhizomes in
early spring when the weather breaks.
SIBs, LAs and JIs should be mulched over winter - leaves
or hay should be fine.
