I would like to suggest that you try a perrennial called Mirabilis (I
probably don't have that spelled right). They are a perrennial that doesn't
start to come up until late April or early May. They start blooming sometime
in late June and stay until after several heavy frosts in the fall. They are
interesting in that they open from "dusk to dawn" and close up during the
daylight. I'd put a few tiny rhizomes in my mainly bulb bed until they were
big enough to move (still haven't done that) and they've coexisted nicely for
a couple of years. I'd originally bought the Mirabilis to fill in the box
and hide the dying, reabsorbing bulb plant matter until the glads came up.
They do the job very nicely and do seem to gather a great deal of comment
because of the opposite to normal opening time for the flowers, but the plant
foliage is okay by itself, too. Donna zone 7 NJ
