I can only tell you how it's worked here. I added some this
year and it's great. OTOH I doubt adding it on it's own would do much
long term good. You really need to work in a fair bit of the good stuff
[manure,compost,peat etc] The areas I added the gypsum along with a
fair bit of good stuff have remained nice and loose. The area I just
added the good stuff [the same stuff in pretty much the same amount]
is pretty hard. My understanding is that the gypsum has a chemical
reaction with the soil that causes it to break up. The archives talk
about not using it on acidic soils. That isn't an issue here since our
soil is anything but. I think I read something last week about a lack
of gypsum causing the plants to have other problems. I'll try and find
it.
The soil map that was posted last week for Canada really helped
to explain what I was seeing with my soil if something similar is
available covering your area it might help. I'm now need to remember
coarse sand to add with everything else.
