Dear Lucy,
I don't know everything you did, but I can tell you that this can happen
on rhizomes received from ANY source. I have had shipments from Cooley's
and Schreiners, and others, where rhizomes have rotted... but, oh well.
If you think there could be a rot issue (i.e. if you have experienced rot in
your garden, period), I would suggest dipping the rhizomes in a 1/10 bleach
sollution before you plant. Rot bacteria and funguses can remain in your
soil, if you have them. I've learned to try to address the soil
management issue, dip the iris if I feel it is necessary, and not blame the
grower.
