A while back there were more questions about how to tell these apart,
and it sounds like these can be pretty distinctive when full-blown -
soft rot is distinctively stinky mushy rhizomes (often doesn't kill baby
new offsets), and scorch takes out whole plants and sections of rows.
However, while on the field tours at the HIPS convention, there were
rotten clumps and foliage here and then, and those poor folks more
knowledgeable than I probably got pretty sick of hearing me constantly
ask, 'now what has caused THAT type of symptom'. What I learned is that
dead is dead, & yes, that rotting clump looks very much like scorch, but
is probably soft rot, or no, that probably is cold injury but it might
rot later. I saw sick plants that were different looking from symptoms
I was used to seeing, but were said to be the same old diseases - mostly
soft rot and leaf spot. The only way to be positive is haul some sick
stuff off to a plant pathologist.

just thought I'd throw that in while we're on the subject of iris death
and torture.
