After growing and hybridizing irises for several decades now, I
do not subscribe to your blanket statement that irises have
become 'fragile' plants. I am assuming when you say irises, you
are referring to the bearded....the tall bearded as they are usually
the rotters. When I say irises here, I am thinking of the tall
bearded.
I think you should look at the irises that have survived and I
further suggest that you look up the parentages of the survivors.
When you get ready to purchase new irises, look up the
parentages and buy those that are progeny of your survivors.
I would also suggest that you buy from local sources.
Try hybridizing with your survivors to create irises that will
tolerate your area. You will make yourself and your neighbors very
happy!
Many irises are regional performers. There are some
hybridizers whose irises simply will not perform well where I live, so
I avoid purchasing those irises. There are iris parents that are
known for the weak children they throw, so I avoid buying anything
that has that weak parent in it. And, there are some areas of the
country I do not order from because irises grown there have a
difficult period of adjustment or none at all here.
Take a second look at the location of your beds. Are they
sufficiently elevated to provide rapid run-off of rainfall? Have you
had your soil tested? Did you give your new irises a bleach bath?
