Novice confused by purple irises turning white

My wife and I are keen iris growers however we know little about
there breeding behaviour. We grow a couple of different varieties of
tall bearded in separate locations and have noticed that our purple
irises(variety unknown)are now sprouting white flowers. Can anyone
out there offer a reason for this to occur. Please forward to John
