I think one trigger may be light combined with age. The seedlings in the
shadecloth enclosure had almost no increase this year. In prior years, by
now probably more than 90% would have one or more increases. This year only
two. Both are on the east edge of the bed an in the row that gets the
maximum sunlight in the morning. My seedling bed is the same as in previous
years. I pretty much have dug it out and replenished the area the same
every year. There are likely other triggers, but this one seems to be the
case this year since it is really about the only difference from the prior
years. However, my caveat would be that seedlings do not grow or act like
mature plants for the early part of their lives here.
