Trees do put out signals when stressed due to drought, heat stress 
etc. The plum borer comes to mind. With the increasing droughts 
in '97, '98 and again in 2002 the cherry and purple plum trees have 
been ravaged by the borer.   I have written off a beautiful flowering 
cherry as a result. I'll have to stick another cherry seed in the 
ground.
