CULT:OT-HUMOR: Old South Auction and Table Sale

Finally the Old South Iris Society plant sale and auction is complete. We owe
a great deal of gratitude to all on this post who chased pictures for us and
contributed information about some of the varieties we were unfamiliar with.
Thanks also to Mid America for some mighty fine plants and to the out of area
folks that attended.

As is common here, I was successful in saving my wife a bundle on irises that
cost only a fortune. If there be anyone on this list that has a cure for this
particular malady my wife would appreciate your intervention into my life. As
for me, I'm happy with the disease and have learned to live with it.

A previous acquisition of Widdershins and one of her seedlings aided greatly
my rationalization for the purchase of Thomas Johnson's Kind Hearted at an
exorbitant price. I had long ago decided if I ever did grow up, when I did I
was gonna be a hero. I was gonna' be a plant hybridizer. So, that purported
fine gold crystalline edge was reason enough to buy without all them other
words in the description. They were just extra stuff.

Then there were those three irises for which we never found pictures. Without
pictures they were just so, so very inexpensive. What else could I do except
buy if all irises are beautiful anyway?

Too, there was a competitive aspect to the auction portion of our sale. There
must be a competitive component ingrained in the Southern psyche too that
dates back to that cursed northern invasion. Once I had bid, honor dictated I
continue until I was successful. Blamin' stuff on the Yankees still works
here. Plus my first bid was really low. I gained a few more irises this way.

And wow! Table sale irises. Tons of table sale irises from member's gardens.
Tons of table sale irises from members gardens acclimated to my climate that
I didn't have! What prices! Graded and priced at half or less of the Eureka
average for premium rhizomes and much, much less for them little bitty 'uns!
I can't even estimate how much money I saved her on irises I won't havta' buy
next year!

Plus, I didn't have to buy the most popular iris on the table sale, Lemon
Chess. More of it was offered for sale on the table than any other variety
and it was the first to disappear. My wife expressed here gratitude to the
other members present for retarding my ability to acquire more irises.
Course, she didn't know I'd had it for a while. I didn't tell her either.
Hummmm... the way that thing grows, and the way it keeps coming back to the
sales, I bet an enterprising feller could make a mighty purdy field in no
time at all... Hummmm.... next year? Hummm...... it wouldn't cost that much
to........ hummmmm......

The most expensive rhizome that sold on the table was Sea Power, there was
not but one and it didn't last past 10 minutes.

Finally, to those patiently awaitin' trades, swaps and purchases with me on
one side or the other of 'em, thanks for lettin' me stay a little boy. I've
been smilin' and havin' the grandest of times.

Hopin' just someday you find as much child in you and get to visit the Old
South Iris Society Auction and Table Sale!

Some poorer than before and still married,
