Re: sending rhizomes south

Arnold,

I used to live in Austin. I concur with Walter. If you can send them now,
assuming the recipients want them now, then they have plenty of time to
settle in before cold weather. If not this year, then next year plan to
wait 'til the very end of August or anytime in September and they'll have
the best chance with the least trouble.

I'm ripping a bed up now, prox. 200 miles north. It's finally cool enough
and it simply has to be done, grasshoppers or no. I'm surprised to be
finding as many rhizomes in the clumps. Some, to all outward appearances
have been gone for a while. VANITY, e.g., appeared to have been demolished.
But on digging in the clump's location, the green tips have been eaten off
just below the soil line and the rhizomes all appear healthy. They didn't
grow very large this summer since all the growth went into grasshopper
growth instead, but they are alive. I can't tell yet on many clumps, but so
far only two clumps so far were completely gone.

This week the grasshoppers have started laying their eggs. In two newly
prepared beds they seem literally to be waiting in line for their turn. One
will be half buried and two or more will appear to be waiting in line. It
may be true this year. The little holes they leave were all over the top of
the bed spaced about 1 to 2 inches apart. After watering, in a few hours
they are all over the place again. They are also using the sand in between
a brick walk and patio. I feel like I'm caught in a weird Hitchcock movie
with no birds and no end. They are nearly always bad here, but In my
wildest nightmare conjuration of grasshoppers, I wouldn't have even gotten
close to what I've seen this year. I hope their laying eggs mean the
grasshopper season is coming to the end of its cycle soon.

Anyway, while on the vacation tour I met people from Austin, TX, who are
interested in iris and to whom I want to send some rhizomes next year.
