I would expand that some. I live a sheltered life constructing my own
realities. <g> I owned Hello Darkness in 1995. Sometime between then and now
it died. I know not from what. In all probability soft rot just playin' the
odds here. The others you mention I have never grown. I reacquired Hello
Darkness this fall. I have had seedlings die after putting up one stalk and
then failing to reproduce. I have not considered this bloom out.
To me bloom out is production of two or more axillary buds, usually several,
that mature and bloom at the same time and then fail to reproduce new
axillary buds. Or, a newly planted rhizome that has the central fan and newly
produced axillary buds bloom at the same time and fail to produce new growth.
I may have the bloom out concept wrong. On the plus side, irises that
routinely exhibit bloom out could conceivably harbor untapped potential for
anyone attempting' to hybridize everbloomin' irises.
It is also possible that one here, Proud Tradition, bloomed out. It produced
about 8 stalks, very early in the season. It was the first to bloom that
year. When I examined the blooming clump it had significant soft rot in the
clump. I took no action. This occurred in 2001 bloom season. The clump had
been moved, separated and divided the previous year.
I once paid $3.00 to go to a fireworks show and was awed. A massive clump of
irises with 20 or so stalks doin' a bloom out might be worth the price of
admission, it's the patience required that hurts. <g>
