Re: Re: CULT: Silverado

I'm truly sorry for all of you for whom SILVERADO won't grow.
Can't recall who made the comment about growing lettuce, but I've been an
organic gardener for years and sold at a Farmer's Mkt. and I can tell you that
some lettuce varieties are often difficult to bring to the cut/harvest stage.
I'm referring to heading lettuces, not the cut 'n grow leaf varieties.
So, having said that, back to SILVERADO! I've successfully grown her in
Hobbs, NM, Fayetteville, AR and now, El Paso. I guess if an iris just doesn't
like your location, give up and find one that does.
KILT LILT is an example of one that just doesn't seem to like my
location(s). I've tried her in Hobbs, NM, (never bloomed -3 years)
Fayetteville, AR, (lived one season and disappeared) and now, El Paso,
bought/planted last fall, survived, no increases but healthy looking. This is
the last time for her if she doesn't show me a bloom spring of 04.
My affair with KL goes back to the summer of 78 when I attended my first
iris show as a spectator. I had never seen so many iris at one time!!! One
caught my eye (even from the doorway)! and it was KILT LILT. Guess you could
call it love at first sight for one new to the world of iris. I had never seen
such a bloom!!! And I have never seen it again!!! Rats!
I'm sending a photo of my SILVERADO to Iris-photos. This rhizome was from
Winterberry and was planted the fall of 02 and she bloomed 03. I just dug her
and she had three sturdy increases. As a side note: All but two from
Winterberry bloomed the following spring. Those not blooming were RUFFLED
FEATHERS and PAINTED PONY. Both increased however.
I'm moving KILT LILT to another location in my bed. . .hope she likes it
well enough to bloom for me just ONE time!!!
