Re: HYB: umbrata (was: HYB: umbrata/Sutton sdlng ]

Linda,

In the breeding of the recessive amoenas the neglecta pattern bred amoenas and
vice versa. The fall overlay (umbrata) in both appears to be the same. The
underlying color and its genetics is a separate issue.

If the fall overlay occurs in a cv that is a Joyce Terry type, more or less,
especially if four-plex "t" is present and part of the yellow (or all, or
parts in sections of the flower, such as the base and inside areas of
standards and styles, one will have an "umbrata" with standards a different
color than the rim of the falls. If, in addition to "umbrata" the flower also
contains I-sub-s (Progenitor/Whole Cloth dominant amoena) the standards might
be bright yellow, and the rim of the falls tan or brown, as in the case of
Mastery. "Umbrata" and dominant amoena *and* Umbrata patterns can co-exist in
the same flower without any discomfort. I believe you see this in many of
Barry Blyth's remarkable bi- and tri-colored cv's. Look at the pedigrees--all
these factors are present, plus c-amoena (yellow amoena) which, when added
into the mix could produce a flower with *white* standards (with yellow in the
base perhaps), falls with purple or red centers (even velvety ones) and rims
of tan or brown or fuchsia. Nothing should surprise.

Add plicata or some of the plicata alleles, or BC to the mix, and *bingo*!
They, however, probably are mutually exclusive of the umbrata pattern.
Bicolor plics are that way because of the Whole Cloth factor (I-sub s), not
neglecta/amoena/variegata fall "umbrata"m is present. To recognize this,
research the pedigrees of Keith Keppel's bicolor plics or of Monologue, which
is also based in part on Keppel work.

In addition, I would not be surprised if there were variations of the I-sub s
factor that would give a kind of umbrata which would be the reverse of the
Emma Cook pattern, a dosage effect of I-sub s per Fred Kerr and also, I
believe, Paul Cook before him.
