It seems to me that last time moth balls were recommended on this list as 
an animal deterrent, someone reported that they are highly toxic.  If you 
choose to distribute moth balls around your garden, please do so only in 
securely closed containers with holes punched in the sides.  That way the 
fumes will escape to provide any potential repellent effect, but you 
won't risk poisoning wildlife and area companion animals that may get a 
little too curious.
