From my experience with squirrels:

Mothballs works for a couple days.

Hot pepper does not work at all.

Gun's work great if you have the time and are allowed to shoot them in your
area.

The only thing that has worked for me is chicken wire covers.

They only dig when there is light not at night. Raccoons and Opossums will
dig at night.

Squirrels seem to like just a few areas, so just cover where they are
digging. I have had them dig the same rhizome up 5 days in a row.

Squirrels will eat part of the rhizome and sometimes just eat the leaves off
or the roots. I have seen them do it.

We have a huge problem here in town with them. You would not even notice the
removal of 25 of them. I have a small yard and have seen as many as 8 at one
time in my yard. Always have 1 or 2 75% of the time.
