CULT:Leaving for now

Victoria, when I've come up against something about which I felt much as you
seem to, I have discovered that if I take in what I *do* understand, and
either ask questions or just sort of park the rest of it in the back of my
mind without worrying whether I understood it or not and wait.

After a while connections form. All of a sudden a light goes on and I realize
"THAT'S what that meant."

A pretty horrid example--

I had been away from photography for a long time and picked up a magazine in
the seventies. There were references to "SLR" this and "SLR" that--and I
hadn't the foggiest what the heck "SLR" meant. My education had stopped with
the Argus C-3 and Kodachrome "10"---(I'll bet most of you don't even know what
the heck I mean by that--unless you were shooting slides in the forties and
fifties).

I kept on reading. There was nowhere to go to ask questions. All of a sudden
I ran across something where "SLR" was spelled out. I had no idea the
technology of picture taking had changed so much. It never occurred to me
that a camera could be anything other than a rangefinder or a monstrosity like
Jimmy Olson used to carry around in the old Superman comic books. Talk about
culture shock!

For someone relatively new to irises, I suspect our conversations here and on
similar robins or lists are just about as opaque as those first photo
magazines were for me.

I have a suggestion. Ask a question or two. No one is going to laugh,
believe me! There are no laughable questions that are asked in honesty. If
one doesn't know the answer, chances are there are others who don't as well.
Some of the more experienced folk (I won't say "older" because age has nothing
to do with it) will be happy to try to explain.

We all learn from each other. That's what this list is for.

In any event, Victoria, I hope you enjoy the irises you grow as much as I do
mine. There's nothing on this green earth I'd rather grow, smell, read about
and just take care of.
