RE: REF: Online verses Print

I will not get on my soap box about continuing to sell the World of Iris.
But I will get on my soap box about illustrated checklists by the Louisiana
and aril societies. Both are first results but both are major ground
breaking efforts. These efforts were only possible because of the current
capabilities of computers affordable to almost everyone in this country.
There may never be a printed version because of cost. Now at least, there is
a much better chance to reduce errors in the names of irises whether in
shows or in the garden. Now for LAs and ABs, when I question the name of a
bloom, the first thing I will check is the illustrated checklist, not the
R&Is. Some things will be printed, some things wouldn't be. IMHO That ratio
will continue to change away from printing as computer costs continue to
decline.

You must realize that The World of Iris was published before the Internet
came into popularity and long before anyone knew about DVDs.

I am disturbed by the idea that printed books are no longer needed when the
same material can be accessed online. I still want to have the actual
hardcopy
to look through at my leisure. Technophobes fail to realize, also, that not
everyone is using computers. There are many irisarians who haven't felt the
need to own a computer. While I am on "iris," I have not subscribed to the
online checklist because I don't have that much use for it. I, also, don't
have a
laptop to take to shows and sales, so I just take the books. I, also, don't
have a DVD player and don't plan to acquire one in the near future. It is
wonderful to have all kinds of information on line, but computers are not
infallible and should not cause the end of printed matter.
