Ellen, I tend to agree with you. I seldom use the on-line registry, but I'm
glad it exists. Most of what I use the registry for is probably the same as
what you do. On occasion I've checked to see if there are descendants of a
certain variety, for example, which one cannot do with the printed lists.
On the other hand, if I need a pedigree tree and it's not one of those in the
HIPS list, I can either ask Mike Lowe to run one up, or I can pull out the
trusty old yellow pad and go to work with a pile of books. I love doing just
that--digging through the pile, building the tree.
Like you, I find the '39 and '49 difficult to decipher, but using the chart
glued in on the inside cover of the '49 or finding the page that has the same
chart in the '39 near the front of the book (post-it notes make wonderful page
markers!) I can find data on whatever. Problem is, I'm not always too sure
what an "S3M" may mean. A lot of the time I'm looking at a description
cryptically coded for an iris that I once grew and knew what it looked like,
so the referenced color translates. Usually it's the parentage I'm after
anyway, and if it's known, it is there. Trouble is, too often the registrant
either doesn't know, or doesn't give the information and there's a dead end.
A lot of the time, those old Bulletins I once had from Mary Tharp had
information the CL's didn't. I always penciled in the information when I ran
across it. Dave Silverberg has posted data sometimes that goes beyond the CL
information too. I copy those when I find them. I've also run across errors
in data in the CL that jump out. For instance, there is one of Wilma
Vallete's irises that used a Muhlestein seedling from the 'Pink Fulfilment'
family that has the number given incorrectly. It is just a typo, but the
logic of the pedigree demands a different number than the one shown. I also
had an idea which seedlings of Tell's she had and used. If I ever run across
that particular typo I intend to drop a note to Mike Lowe about it. I'm sure
I'm right about the difference. It's trivial, anyway, but fun to note things
of that nature.
