Helen's comments about buying the "volumes" one at a time (= years?).
I haven't opened all the posts in this vein, so I may have missed something
here, but here are some more of my feelings on this (rather broad) subject.
First think I'm hearing some issue as to one year vs. multi-year treatments
(in print) as well as the print vs. online issue.
Personally, I like the ten year volumes, less to keep track of, and it
seems cheaper to me (one ten year volume is cheaper than ten one year lists
as I recall - yes?). Puts more info in one place too, and makes it easier
to find (flipping through one larger volume is easier than ten smaller
ones). Obviously the ten year volumes can only be offered every ten years
though. My bias as to which Irises I prefer makes a big impact on my
opinion here too. I rarely look up a new Iris, and when I do, the
information is usually easy to find on line, because newbies usually get
talked about a lot and sold in current catalogs. So, I have no real desire
to purchase the recent volumes that come in one year increments and
probably never will buy one. I do buy the ten year volumes, and use the
older ones constantly (the older the Irises, the more I tend to like them -
on average).
As for the online vs. print. I would vote for both, not one or the other.
I still want my printed copies for various reasons, if for no other reason
than the convenience of being able to have the information wherever and
whenever I want it. I also like having printed copies of things (I have
huge stacks of photo copies, reprints, thousands of books, etc. etc.).
On the flip side, if I was to start in really researching pedigrees,
descriptions, etc., and needed to go through large amounts of data in short
amounts of time, I would opt for the convenience of digital online
databases every time. If I start breeding programs, my fee for the online
database access will be paid religiously. Right now though, the priorities
of life mean that I do not use the online database much, and what I need I
can find in the printed versions, so, for the moment, I do not subscribe.
