Just a guess here.

Sometimes PBF is seasonal.  It may return on the new growth in the spring
(or fall) only to disappear as the foliage matures.  Even if it is only
there in the spring, it sounds like it could be nice.

It is also possible that it was only expressed in the seedling, and is now
gone forever (except in the genes).
