HIST:HYB:Hall pink line and Dauntless

In looking for the possible origin of the fall overlay in WINE AND ROSES Linda
Mann points to DAUNTLESS as mentioned as one of the ancestral varieties in the
Hall line.

Fantasy has as its maternal parent #40-97 from Lullaby x #35-40. That
seedling is from DAUNTLESS x RAMESES.

From their photos, DAUNTLESS is a strongly expressed Umbrata, RAMESES is a
bicolor with an odd-looking wash in the fall. Considering its ancestry, I'd
say it has the Umbrata, but not as obvious as the other, quite possibly a low
dosage effect of the factor. FANTASY has the bitone/bicolor that looks more
related to what shows in RAMESES than DAUNTLESS. But, Linda, you are
right--DAUNTLESS is right at the heart of the Hall line.

The information that produced this didn't come from me--but from a much better
source, by the way.

CHERIE and FANTASY are front and center in the development of the Hall pinks.
Since I'm not sure just how the dominant inhibitor "I" affects Umbrata, it is
possible it gets passed along hidden behind the clear pink in the line, but
Hall undoubtedly carried forward seedlings along the line of FANTASY as well,
and WINE AND ROSES may emerge from those. That seems entirely likely to me,
although I don't recall any introduced varieties of the obvious "Fantasy" type
until we get to WINE AND ROSES. That doesn't mean they weren't there in his
seedling patch.

In some seedlings from HAPPENSTANCE ("I" non-blue) with POWER WOMAN (Umbrata
on a dark background) there was one seedling that was a tangerine bearded
bitone with really messy falls, but quite clearly showing a limited Umbrata
pattern on a pink-plus-lavender ground. I wish I had photographed it before
tossing it out.

There were some similar ones with tan Umbrata traces on yellow ground. They
also were quickly tossed, but the combination of what I assumed to be "I"
non-blues did not block the Umbrata expression if I interpreted what I saw
correctly. I've held back some unbloomed seedlings from the reciprocal
crosses between HAPPENSTANCE and POWER WOMAN so there may be more of the same.
I will remember to photograph them when they bloom.
