What you describe, Linda, in the seedling illustrates an important point.
What one can see--or speculate about--in a photograph does not begin to
compare what one sees actually holding the flower in the hand.
I don't know about cell layers and how they are arranged in the fall of an
iris. A transverse slice on a good microscope with segments of edge, mid,
center fall comparend might be interesting--partly to see what pigments are in
which layers, how the layers are arranged.
The "scratch test" suggests that at least the Umbrata is in the surface layer
of the fall. An abrasion of the blossom leaves a white line or patch. Such
accidents resulting from rough handling of specimens on the way to a show sure
can grade down an otherwise very good show bench specimen stalk.
