Paul's comment about a two-year period, extended to three in unusual
circumstances, is also about what I have expected, both for the few I host
here and for those I've arranged to send out.
My purposes have been in marketability, growability and overall quality in
response to local conditions in broadly different climates and zones. I've
just begun sending things out, and have had guests here for one year with an
informal report about survival (the first consideration here!) going back to
the grower.
Regional Test Gardens, such as here in Region 4, might be difficult to
evaluate, as the region is huge and covers a highly varied set of climates
and conditions. What I have here is a "zone 7" with similar winter minima
to Paul's, but quite different cycles of temperature and rainfall due to the
mountain conditions compared to the near-coastal conditons from the
tri-cities (Raleigh, etc.) to the outer banks. We live in different worlds.
The native ecosystems are also quite unlike.
