Yes, I would agree with that also.  A very gentle squeeze between your thumb and index finger will tell you that before drying them or planting directly from the pod.  They will pop like you had described as well or at the very least collapse.  Maybe the hollow ones are filling up with some water and whatever is in them just rots.

Popping seeds be  bad, Adam.  They either never formed embryos or
rotted.
