Re: CULT:HYB: Trial Gardens [was: Re: HYB: AIS: Trial Garden Idea Redux]

I have a row of historic noids under a large willow, all one cultivar. The south end of the row gets the most sun, the north the least. When they bloom, the bloom moves from the south end to the north over a period of a couple weeks. If the row were longer, so that the south end received full sun, I'd guess there would be a gap of at least three weeks between bloom times, maybe more.

I wonder if bloom times for early bloomers could be slowed some for conventions and shows by putting them in part shade. I can think of various problems with that idea, including that iris grow more slowly in part shade and might not bloom at all. But I'm curious if anyone has tried such a thing.

mostly 80s now, cold at night, but I haven't noticed any fall colors in the mountains yet--they'll be there soon

also a guest at Portland, my first attempt at this process. The color is
powerful, but the season is early and may miss convention date except for
straggling last blooms.>>
